Salt Lake City Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

A Dental Implant is an artificial tooth root, typically made from titanium. It is placed in the bone and supports a restoration to replace the missing tooth or teeth. With today’s technology, virtually all Dental Implants are similar to an actual tooth root which aids in the placement and is less invasive than previous Dental Implants.

Why choose a Dental Implant?

If you are missing a tooth or many teeth, there are a number of options available to replace it.

  • One option is a Dental Bridge, which is made by crowning the two neighboring  teeth on either side of the missing tooth. A floating crown is attached between the two crowned teeth to replace the tooth. The disadvantage to a Dental Bridge is that it involves removing enamel from two possibly healthy teeth that may not need a restoration.
  • Dental Implants are another option to replacing teeth. The advantage to this is that it does not require an invasive procedure on neighboring teeth. A simple Implant is placed in the bone and is typically crowned to replace the missing tooth.

Dental Implants can also replace several teeth or can supply implant clasps for Denture attachments.

There are many variations and combinations that can be done with Dental Implants, the options are astounding!

How is a Dental Implant Placed?

  1. The Dental Implant area is given anesthetic to numb the site. A very gentle implant drill is used to make room in the bone for the Implant.  The sterile Implant is placed in the bone and a small cap is placed on the implant to allow the gums to heal quickly.
  2. Once the Implant is placed, time must be given for the bone to regenerate and attach tightly to the Implant. This can vary from 3 to 6 months, depending on the person and any conditions that may exist. For some special cases, immediate restorations may be placed on Dental Implants the same day they are placed.
  3. Once the Implant is secure in the bone and the area is fully healed, an impression can be made for the Crown. The Implant Crown is made to look exactly like it’s neighboring teeth, thus making it nearly impossible for peers to notice the Implant and/or Crown.
